What is Myrbetriq or generic Mirabegron ER?

Myrbetriq or generic Mirabegron ER is a prescription medication used in the management of overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. These symptoms might include frequent urge to urinate, leakage (aka accidental urination), and strong and sudden needs to urinate (aka "urgency"). People dealing with overactive bladder and its associated symptoms may be prescribed Myrbetriq.

Myrbetriq helps decrease the frequency and urgency associated with OAB. It does so by targeting beta-3 adrenergic receptors. In the process, it helps relax the bladder muscle so the bladder is able to hold a larger amount of urine before it triggers the need to urinate.

Myrbetriq is an extended release formula that is generally taken once per day. In some cases, Myrbetriq may be taken in conjunction with another medication such as Solifenacin Succinate.

Conditions treated by Myrbetriq or generic Mirabegron ER

What is Myrbetriq used for? Most commonly, it's used in the management of overactive bladder symptoms, which include:

  • Frequently needing to go to urinate, which might include urinating eight or more times per day and/or waking up more than twice per night to go to the bathroom
  • The sudden and/or urgent need to urinate
  • Accidental urination (aka incontinence) either because of leakage or not making it to the bathroom in time

The condition often results when bladder muscles contract at inappropriate times, triggering leakage or the need to go to the bathroom. While researchers are still trying to figure out the exact cause, they do know the condition is common: Millions of people in the U.S. experience overactive bladder.

For some people, the condition may resolve on its own or via lifestyle changes. If lifestyle changes don't help manage symptoms, medication may be useful.

While managing OAB is the primary reason people use Myrbetriq, your doctor may prescribe Myrbetriq for other uses.

What to know before using Myrbetriq or generic Mirabegron ER

Prior to using Myrbetriq, keep the following in mind.

  • Tell your doctor about any preexisting medical conditions you have or any medications or supplements you use. Especially tell your doctor if you take solifenacin (Vesicare), digoxin (Lanoxin), propafenone (Rythmol), flecainide (Tambocor), or thioridazine (Mellaril). This will help protect you from negative drug interactions. Let your doctor know if you have kidney or liver problems before taking Myrbetriq.

  • Be aware that there is extremely limited research on the safety of using Myrbetriq while pregnant or breastfeeding. It's generally not advised to use Myrbetriq under these circumstances.

  • Carefully follow your doctor's directions for using Myrbetriq. Plan to take the medication around the same time each day.

  • Swallow Myrbetriq tablets whole with water. Do not chew, crush, or split the tablets. Know that Myrbetriq can be taken with or without food.

  • If you miss a dose, simply take the dose when you remember and then resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not take more than a single dose in one day. Do not double up on doses even if you miss a dose.

  • Know that it may take eight weeks or more before the medication has a noticeable effect. Do not stop taking Mirabegron without consulting your doctor.
