Social Work is a two year program which combines knowledge and skills in social work, humanities, and behavioural sciences. The program prepares students for social work practice with individuals, families, groups and communities. Graduates are employed in a broad range of government (public), non-profit and private agencies. Social Work diploma graduates are eligible to apply to become Registered Social Workers in Alberta.

Theory into action

You ll get extensive hands-on experience starting in your first year working with diverse populations including individuals and families living in poverty, high risk families, recent immigrants, the elderly, young offenders and others.

Transformative education for exceptional social work practice.

You will gain knowledge and practice in a variety of social work skills, including the following activities with individuals, families, groups and communities:
assessing needs and strengths
goal setting and planning
developing intervention plans
intervening effectively with persons of varying ages, races, genders and abilities
supportive counselling
Evaluation practice and/or programs

Graduates may be employed in a range of government, nonprofit and private agencies. The demand for graduates is high and continues to grow. In Alberta, the job market for social workers is expected to increase by 3% to 4% a year. Your job title could be:
Social worker
Case Manager
Outreach Worker
Community worker
Mental Health Worker
Probation/Corrections Officer

Graduates may pursue a Bachelor of Social Work at many universities across Canada, including the University of Calgary, Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, and the University of Manitoba. Student graduates may also choose to stay at Mount Royal to complete a degree.
